Low Level Laser Therapy [What is it?]

Low level laser involves using a low power laser to stimulate healing and reduce pain. This light source, set within a specific spectrum of 780 - 860nm , penetrates the skin and is absorbed by damaged cells which triggers cellular change. Evidence over the past 20-30 years has found that when correct therapeutic dosages are given, a reduction in inflammation, accelerated tissue healing and a reduction in pain relief can be achieved.

Low Level Laser Therapy [What does it do?]

The application of light penetrates the skin and soft tissue to elicit a photochemical reaction within damaged cells. This laser light is then converted into energy to help reduce pain, speed up tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation. Low level laser can therefore lead to the following therapeutic effects:

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Promote healing of common musculoskeletal injuries e.g. plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendinopathy, muscle and ligament injuries

  • Accelerate tissue remodelling

  • Relief from nerve pain

  • Relax contracted muscle fibres and release trigger points

Low Level Laser Therapy [How can it help me?]

At ActiveForm Physiotherapy we use a class 3B laser so there is no photo thermal risk meaning that no heat is produced at all. The procedure is therefore completely pain-free and application can not cause or aggravate current patient pain. The therapy is safe and has no adverse side effects.
